At a cat rescue and adoption center in Chengdu, a young woman was going through an adoption process, which the center sees as a necessary ritual that attests to their bonding. She already has an orange tabby at home and decided to find it a companion by adopting a kitten.

After filling out the online adoption questionnaire, she went to the rescue center and took the kitten home, along with the documents and photos to mark the moment.

The founder of the rescue center is Xu Zhe, who led a team of nine people rescuing cats in Chengdu and Chongqing. Chengdu is located in the basin, notorious for its muggy and overcast climate. However, the rescue center outside the city's third ring road has a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. Several tabby cats stretched out on a chair with their round faces lost in sleep; other cats meowed and swiped their tail gently at your feet; some lied meekly in volunteers' arms, dozing but somehow seeming alert. Here, newborn kittens and their mothers live safely in isolated rooms with ample food and clean water, waiting for adopters.

Xu's channel "Living with Cats" currently has 10 million followers across the network as a cat adoption rescue platform. Since April 2019, He has started to film the process of rescuing stray cats, edited them into videos, and uploaded them to the video site "Bilibili". He was also awarded one of the top 100 content creators last year. But in fact, his rescue work predates that, starting in early 2016.

The rescue center does not accept donations, but supporters send cat food, cat litter, and cans of food from all over the country, filling the center's food cupboard.

The most conspicuous entrance of the rescue center is a wall in front of which hangs a large red curtain. Everyone who adopts a cat goes through a ceremony in this room akin to a Chinese marriage officiating: reading an oath of care, having a photo taken just as newlyweds would, and being issued a certificate.

Here, 300 yuan ($47) is the minimum charge for adoption, including three free vaccine shots worth more than the charge itself. Xu insisted on this charge, saying he believes it ensures that every adopter has a sense of responsibility for their pet.

Just as what weddings imply, adoption ceremonies represent the commitment to accompany the cat for a lifetime.
