As a member of the Creative Cities Network since 2010, Chengdu has been hailed as the first UNESCO City of Gastronomy in Asia.

Chengdu City of Gastronomy

As a renowned center of gastronomy, Chengdu is the cradle and center of Sichuan cuisine. A Chinese saying states that "the best cuisine is from China, while the richest flavor is from Chengdu". In Chengdu, the integration of food and life is deeply rooted in the creed of ancient Chinese philosophy about striving for harmony while pursuing form and spirits. The most outstanding feature of Chengdu cuisine is the diversity of flavors, based on the artful mixture of sweet, sour, bitter, spicy and salty flavors.

Chengdu is a city with cultural spirits of openness and inclusiveness, and the same goes for its food. There has never been an opposition between tradition and novelty, Chinese and Western cuisine, or greasy spoons and fine dining restaurants. The taste of a dish is always the last word.
