On scene means manifest presence. On scene expresses the objectivity of the object, an expression of the self, the objective, the existent, the seen, and the happening. Song Baiyu's street photography videos revolve around this central idea. He employs narrative techniques to immediately, honestly, and objectively present the strange stories that are occurring. He captures the "on scene" of Chengdu residents' life with his lens.
SongBaiyu is an ordinary, unassuming old man, who likes to wander the streets with a canvas bag and a card camera, and he always uses his spare time to capture such moments in the city. "I always watched people on my walks, mostly with my phone, and I was always quick to record people and things I found interesting, clothes, forms, looks, hairstyles… I find a lot of joy, beauty, and interesting life happening in the ordinary, without spending a lot of money or being in a hurry."
Nowadays, we live in a time when information is growing at an exponential rate and material is expanding quickly. Most young individuals perpetually believe that they lack time. They are preoccupied with their own needs, work, money, marriage, and children. They appear to have lost sight of the importance of taking breaks, slowing down, and living a life that takes twists and turns.
These fleeting moments, some amusing and others a little sad, are captured in Song Baiyu's photography works, which serve as a reminder to viewers to put on a life-view in order to fully appreciate everything around them.
