On the occasion of the 986th birthday of Su Shi (also known as Su Dongpo), the Chengdu City Concert Hall will stage the play Su Dongpo to commemorate this famous calligrapher, essayist, gastronomer, pharmacologist, poet, politician, and travel writer of the the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). 

 

Beginning with the "Wutai Poetry Case", a sensational literary prison case in Chinese history in which Su Shi became the first to be imprisoned for writing, the play Su Dongpo looks back at Su Shi's ups and downs from the age of 44 to his death at the age of 64.

 

It was in these twenty years that he was relegated and reinstated. Regardless of the situation, Su Shi always stayed optimistic and open-minded, and made extraordinary achievements in literary creation.
