Du Fu, one of the greatest realistic poets in China, is often placed in the same literary league as William Shakespeare and Dante Alighieri. His poems, rich in social content, mostly mirror the social outlook of the once prosperous Tang Dynasty in decline and are filled with his deep concern for the country and the people.
