China to Add X-Series for Trains with Max Speeds over 350 km/h
Author: GoChengdu 2026-10-22

China will adjust its national train numbering system in two batches in late November and late December. The newly introduced X-series will be used primarily for Fuxing electric multiple unit (EMU) trains with maximum operating speeds above 350 km/h.

X, read as xin (“new” in Chinese), represents Fuxing EMU trains operating at speeds exceeding 350 km/h and symbolizes “new speed and new products”. The train numbers will range from X1 to X9998. The adjustment will be accompanied by the implementation of the revised Regulations on Train Numbering. The number of prefix letters for passenger EMU trains will increase from four to seven, expanding the number of available train numbers by nearly 40%. Despite the changes to train numbering, train services will continue to operate in accordance with the current operating routes and timetable.

For passenger trains, following the adjustment, the prefix letter G will be used for Fuxing EMU trains with maximum operating speeds of 350 km/h, T for EMU trains with maximum operating speeds of 300 km/h, and K for EMU trains with maximum operating speeds between 200 km/h and 250 km/h. D, C, and S will denote power-concentrated EMU, intercity, and suburban (city-level) passenger trains respectively. Z, N, and V will identify express and conventional passenger trains at different speed levels. Y will identify conventional tourist trains.

The train numbering adjustment will be implemented in two batches: conventional passenger trains, tourist trains, freight trains, and other services will be adjusted in late November, while adjustments will apply to high-speed EMU trains, power-concentrated EMU trains, intercity and suburban (city-level) passenger trains, EMU express freight trains, and other services in late December.
