Recently, as more Chinese TV dramas have gained popularity overseas, the scenes and settings featured in these shows have become popular attractions for international tourists. In Wufengxi Ancient Town in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, visitors can step out of the screen and experience the culture and traditions seen on TV. They can also discover a variety of traditional Chinese arts and intangible cultural heritage.

 

At 2:00 p.m., a traditional "city gate opening ceremony" got underway by the river at the entrance to Wufengxi Ancient Town. Dressed in traditional costumes, performers took on the roles of characters from popular TV dramas and recreated an ancient welcoming ceremony. Accompanied by traditional music, they greeted visitors and opened the city gates, taking tourists on an immersive journey back in time. 

 

The costume performance is just the beginning. Visitors can also experience Chinese intangible culture here. Take the shadow puppets for example. They can not only watch the show, but also have a go at operating the puppets themselves. Many visitors told us it's really a fun way to experience this Chinese traditional art.

The cultural experience continues along the ancient streets and lanes. Across the town, there are 18 interactive stations. The activities run daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors can search for performers dressed as characters from popular TV dramas. At each stop, they can take part in fun games and challenges, and win tokens that can be exchanged for souvenirs and other gifts.

Today, Wufengxi is more than a place to see old buildings. It tells the story of a town shaped by its history of river trade, commerce and migration. For international visitors, it offers a chance to discover a different side of China, where mountains, river, history and everyday life come together in this charming ancient town.
