Macao, Chengdu Jointly Push Panda Conservation Forward

Authors: Go Chengdu

2019 is the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, as well as 9th year of Chinese central government gave two giant pandas “Kaikai” and “Xinxin” (their names’ combination means “happy” in Chinese) to Macao as gift.
In the past nine years of cooperation between Chengdu of Chinese mainland and Macao, both parties have achieved great success in giant panda's breeding, R&D, protection and education as well as witnessed the birth of male twin-cubs "Jianjian" and "Kangkang" (their names' combination means "healthy" in Chinese) on Jun. 26, 2016 in Macao.
The weight of "Kangkang" at birth is just 53.8 grams, only 11 grams more than "Chenglang", which is the lightest panda at birth. Huang Wenjun, managing veterinarian from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (the Panda Base), who went to Macao for taking care of panda cub at that time, said compared with normal panda cubs weighed about 120 to 150 grams at birth, "Kangkang" belongs to the cub of extremely light weight at birth, whose survival rate is very low. However, he got through the hard time and grows healthy and strong in Macao's Seac Pai Van Park, thanks to thoughtful and thorough care from expert teams from Chengdu and Macao.
Zhou Shuyi, feeder of giant pandas in Seac Pai Van Park, has been participating in the job of taking care of giant pandas since Macao Giant Panda Pavilion's opening. She witnessed the birth of the twin-cubs and their grow-up, saying although it's not an easy task, she still feels happy and gratified to see the cubs growing healthy and strong.
The Panda Base has been offering great support to Macao's Park during their past nine-year cooperation and the Park has developed a model suitable for raising giant pandas in the island as well as made great progress in giant pandas' breeding, feeding, health, baby-caring, training, enrichment and scientific education, said an official from the Park.
