Chengdu Proposes to be Home of National Panda Park

Chengdu has declared to increase forest coverage and improve ecological environment in the Longmen Mountains and Longquan Mountains in a bid to create the first National Giant Panda Park in the city's surrounding areas.
The State Forestry Administration has planned to set up the first National Giant Panda Park in Sichuan and the project is top of the agenda for the 13th Five-Year Plan Period of the forestry department of Sichuan.
A recent survey of the giant pandas in China shows that Sichuan is home to 1, 387 pandas in the wild, accounting for 74.4% of the national total, of which 79 pandas live in the territory of Chengdu. Chengdu plans to make the National Giant Panda Park a first-class ecological reserve for giant pandas, considering its vicinity to the city and the city's advanced technologies for panda protection, as well as a multi-functional site for education, sightseeing, etc.
Other candidates to have proposed the establish the National Giant Panda Park include the cities of Ya'an and Mianyang, both in Sichuan province.
