Chengdu is situated in a subtropical humid region characterized by complex topography, a diverse natural ecological environment and abundant biological resources. It is one of 30 biodiversity hotspot regions around the world and possesses 73 rare wildlife species including the giant panda, red panda, golden monkey and gnu and much more. Its fauna is equally diverse containing 29 rare wild plants such as gingko, davidia involucrate, machilus gamblei and emmenopterys henryi and 3390 kinds of higher plants. As the “hometown of panda”, Chengdu has founded 4 national-level giant panda natural reserves and giant panda habitats occupying an area of about 1500 square kilometers which have breed nearly 50 wild giant pandas. Chengdu is the city nearest to the giant panda’s core habitat (approximately 70 kilometers from downtown Chengdu) that has the largest altitude increase (from 350m to 5600m). Additionally it is also the only mega city where both captive and wild giant pandas live.
