West China Hospital in Chengdu Diagnoses COVID-19 Patients via Online CT Scanning

Authors: Go Chengdu

For the first time in China, the Department of Radiology of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, located in Chengdu, made remote medical diagnoses of three COVID-19 patients in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan, with the help of an online CT (computerized tomography) scanning system and 5G network, on February 24.
Far flung and over three hundreds kilometers away from Chengdu, the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is relatively short of medical resources. The remote diagnoses of the experts in Chengdu helped local doctors a lot to offer the patients more efficient treatments.

The China Telecom Sichuan Branch and Siemens Healthineers co-provided the technological support for the diagnoses. All real-time data of the CT scanning were transmitted immediately to the West China Hospital when the patients were undergoing the scans.
According to a representative from the Siemens Healthineers, in the past, during a remote consultation all data were transmitted to doctors after the scanning had been performed, which to some extent affects the accuracy of diagnosis. With 5G technology, doctors can operate the CT-scanning equipment remotely, analyze the CT data in real time and observe the patient's conditions simultaneously. "The good thing is that if we have any question about the image, we can try to find out the problem at once, and we can communicate with local doctors to make more accurate diagnoses," said Dr. Li zhenlin with the West China Hospital.
