Foreign Guests Share Impressions of Chengdu

Authors: Go Chengdu

During the 2018 World Cities Culture (Tianfu) Symposium held in Chengdu June 20-22, some foreign guests shared their impressions of Chengdu as well as their views on how to further develop the city’s cultural and creative sector on the first day of the event.
Mr. Paul Owens, director of the World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF), expressed his expectation of the symposium. "I hope that it can be an effective platform both for global cities to communicate with one another and for Chengdu to promote its Tianfu Culture." In his point of view, Tianfu Culture highlights friendship and kindness. He is highly impressed by the hospitality and generosity of the people in Chengdu, which is permeated with a unique atmosphere of oriental culture.
Mr. Owens acclaimed the city for its great efforts to develop such creative industries involving music, fashion and design. Through the case study of Austin, capital of the U.S. state of Texas, which is known for its well-developed music sector, he suggested Chengdu should prioritize the industries with distinct strengths and advantages.
Mr. John Newbigin, founder and chairman of Creative England, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the growth of the creative industries, expressed his hope to help small companies and startups from Britain and Chengdu to get access into each other's market. "Chengdu is a dynamic and creative city. It provides various opportunities for creative organizations and companies here," he said.
He also shared London's experience of developing the creative industry. "Chengdu should be open wider to the outside world and make friends worldwide. And it also needs to focus on its competitive industries, such as the music and game sectors."
