Located in the southwest (European part) of the Russian Federation, on the western bank of the Volga River, Volgograd (Волгоград) has a population of 1.01 million with an area of 565 sq.km, and is the important industrial and cultural center as well as the transportation hub of water, land, and air of southern Russia.
Volgograd has advanced industries in the fields of shipbuilding, iron and steel, petrochemical engineering, and food. It has 9 institutions of higher education, 7 theaters, and scores of libraries.
With a history of more than 400 years, it is famous for the Battle of Tsaritsyn in the Russian Civil War, and is world-renowned for the Battle of Stalingrad in the war against the Nazi invasion.
Volgograd Children Folk Dance Troupe participated in Chengdu International Sister Cities Week 2011 and the 3rd International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The troupe was awarded a golden prize for its Russian-style dance.
In July 2012, two schools of Chengdu and Volgograd set up sister-school relationship.
