Montpellier is the first sister city of Chengdu. The capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Montpellier is the eighth-largest city in France and the most important business and industrial center in the southwest of the country. It has one of the world’s largest vineyards and largest wine output.

Montpellier is also a famous city for its culture. It boasts the University of Montpellier founded by Nicholas IV, Roman Pope, in 1289. The Fabre Museum and the Atger Museum of Montpellier house numerous paintings, especially ancient ones, among which there are more than 300 paintings by the renowned Italian painter Raphael alone.

Montpellier has long been a tourist resort for its moderate climate and beautiful scenery with a lot of ancient architectures. Perou Square, at the highest point of Montpellier, is one of the most well-known squares in France. The statue of French king Louis XIV on horseback was situated at the square. Arch of Triumph — L’arc de Triomphe de Perou, which was built to commemorate Louis XIV. Hundreds of official residences built in the 15th and 16th century were well reserved in the city.

Located in southern France and rich in grape production, Montpellier has a thriving trade in wine and other traditional industries such as foodstuffs, textiles, candles, soap, perfume and chemicals.

Exchange activities:

Sino-French Film Week: Chengdu and Montpelier have held a number of film-related activities, including French film posters exhibition.

Le Comptoir des Fous Music Concert: the French band Le Comptoir des Fous (Bar Freaks) from Montpellier visited Chengdu in the summer of 2012.

Student Exchange Program: The two cities set up government scholarships to cultivate talents in Chinese, French and other fields, 34 Chinese and French students have benefited from this program.

Confucius Classroom and Rebelais Frecnch Classroom: the city governments signed a cooperation agreement in 2012 to set up 9 Rabelais French Classrooms in high and primary schools in Chengdu and 6 Confucius Classrooms in Montpellier schools.

Cooperation in health: Chengdu and Montpellier have signed a memorandum of understanding in the health sector. The Chengdu Hospital Authority will join with the medical center at Montpellier University to open centers in Chengdu for research into diabetes and senility in 2014.

HIV/AIDS Prevention Program: Doctors of the World HIV/AIDS prevention program was launched in Chengdu, the second Chinese city after Shanghai.
