Medan, the capital of Sumatra, Indonesia, is the largest city with the strongest comprehensive strength in Sumatra, and the third largest city in Indonesia. Facing Singapore across the strait of Malacca, the city is located at the center of Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Triangle Economic Zone as a key port and an important passageway of Indonesian foreign trade.
With an area of 265 sq.km, Medan has 21 districts and 151 sub-districts under its jurisdiction. It has complete infrastructure facilities, well-equipped airports and sea ports, transport system of railways and roads.
Trade and finance are the pillar industries in Medan, which account for a large ratio of the city’s GDP.
Close to the strait of Malacca, Medan enjoys adbundant tour resources with numerous scenic spots,historic sites and cultural relics, such as Maimoon Palace, Crocodile Farm. Lake Toba and the Lumbini Golden Buddhist Pagoda.
Delegation from Medan, headed by Secretary-general of the Medan City government, attended the 10th Western China International Fair May 26-29, 2011 and talked on cooperation with Chengdu in the fields of agriculture, environment protection and student exchange programs.
In March 2012, Medan City Council Deputy Speaker headed a 16-member delegation to visit Chengdu. The delegation visited incineration power plant in Luodai Township and the two sides talked on further cooperation.
Medan children’s art troupe had performances at 2011 Chengdu International Festival of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In December 2012, Medan held a celebration for the 10th anniversary of the friendship between the two cities of Medan and Chengdu.
