Located on the Meuse River, Maastricht is a town and a municipality in the Southeast of the Netherlands. It is the capital city in the province of Limburg.
In history Maastricht began as a garrison city in the era of the Roman Empire. Nowadays, it is known for its distinctive culture, local folklore and education.
Maastricht is also known as the birthplace of the European Union, as the Maastricht Treaty has begun the age of the European citizenship, and the single European currency, the euro.
The University of Electronic Science and Technology and Maastricht University set up interschool cooperation in September 2009.
In May 2012, the two cities signed the memorandum of the sister cities’ relationship between Chengdu and Maastricht.
