The city encompasses a land area of about 98 sq.km on the banks of the Waikato River, and is home to over 150,000 people.
Initially an agricultural service center, Hamilton now has a growing and diverse economy and is the third fastest growing urban area in New Zealand. Education and research and development play an important part in Hamilton’s economy.
■In October 2008, Chengdu University carried out educational exchanges between Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton, marking the beginning of cooperation and exchanges between the two cities.
■In September 2009, Chengdu University and Waikato Institute of Technology conducted a joint program for nurturing students from the two cities.
■In May 2011, a delegation from Hamilton visited Chengdu and attended Chengdu International Sister Cities Week 2011 and the 3rd International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
■In July 2011, a delegation from Chengdu visited Hamilton, exchanged views with Hamilton relevant institutions on agricultural technology, raw milk production, food safety and education, etc.
■In December 2013, Chengdu University and Waikato Institute of Technology held an art exchange exhibition in Hamilton.
■In March, 2013, Chengdu officials paid a visit to Hamilton and signed an memorandum of understanding on the establishment of sister relationship between Chengdu and Hamilton.
■In March, 2013, A delegation from Chengdu visited Hamilton, had detailed discussions on talent exchange and cooperation.
■In June 2014, Chengdu officials arrived in Hamilton and had a field trip on New Zealand national agriculture exhibition.
