The "toilet revolution", a national campaign to improve both the appearance and facilities in washrooms at tourist attractions, gave a boost to the rural tourism in Wenjiang District, Chengdu.
By 2017, Wenjiang has built 24 new washrooms and renovated 23 ones at the scenic areas. Baby care rooms and handles for the disabled were added to meet the requirements of tourists.
The year 2015 saw the beginning of a three-year campaign to increase the number and sanitation of toilets at tourist sites. As of the end of October 2017, over 20 billion yuan ($3 billion) was spent on installing or renovating 68,000 toilets at tourist sites, exceeding the original target of 57,000 toilets.
