The Chengdu-Europe Freight Train started its first run in 2015 on Jan 18 and is projected to arrive in Europe in 12 days. The return service is also expected to be offered in the first half of the year, according to Xinhua.
Statistics from Chengdu Customs show that 77 trains have run to Europe from Chengdu since 2013, transporting goods valued at US$580million (approx RMB3596million). 46 percent of those goods were from other parts of China, such as Shanghai, and Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces, marking the fact that the freight train has enjoyed a great radiation effect.
The “passengers” on the Chengdu-Europe Freight Train included Dell laptops, Lenovo computers, Philip lights, automobile spare parts and shoes. At present, the tablet PC is under transportation test to see if it can be safely transported by train without getting damaged. If it passes the test, it is expected to be transported to Europe by the freight train too before June.
The running time of the train is anticipated to be reduced to 10 days. And the return service will be started by June 2015. When trains come back from Europe, the goods can be transported to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River by water.
With the start of the return service, according to a relevant official, it will only take 20 to 30 days for imported car buyers to drive their new cars. Currently, it takes two to three months.
