"I'm a passionate fan of Chengdu," said Mr. Ran Peleg, Consul General of Israel in Chengdu, making no effort to conceal his love for this city. Thirteen years ago, he was a backpacker and traveled to Chengdu with his girlfriend (now wife). He successfully proposed to her at a Sichuan cuisine restaurant in the city. Today, as Consul General of the Consulate General of Israel in Chengdu, he is very pleased to be present at the " TASTE OF ISRAEL" Food, Culture and Tourism Themed Day to promote cultural exchanges between his home country and Chengdu.
"I like Chengdu people's lifestyle and their attitude toward life. I remember when I and my girlfriend came to Chengdu, after having drunk some tea, we went to a local restaurant. It was so lively and cozy, and I felt it was the right place and right time to propose to my girlfriend," he said.
Because Chengdu always brings back his sweet memories of love, Mr. Peleg has a strong and special feeling for Sichuan food, in particular, spicy dishes. "Twice Cooked Pork, Mapo Tofu, Dan Dan Noodles and hotpot are my favorites. The hotter, the more I like them," he said.
The spicy specialties in Chengdu conquer the stomachs and hearts of both the Pelegs. When he came into office in the city last year, just getting off the plane in the wee hours, the couple immediately headed for a Dan Dan Noodles restaurant.
Mr. Vithit Powattanasuk, Consul General of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chengdu, is also a fan of Dan Dan Noodles.
"Food is the easiest and most effective way for cultural exchanges," he said, believing that food is key to cultural exchanges between Asia and the rest of the world. "It gives outsiders the immediate knowledge of the local culture and people."
In the view of Consul General of Australia in Chengdu, Mr. Christopher Lim, food has been playing a significant role in promoting cultural exchanges between Asia and other parts of the globe."Food is a universal language. Although we did not hold any food event this time, we've had a better understanding of the culture of Chengdu and other places in the world through their delicacies," said Mr Lim, hoping that he would have opportunities to present Australian cuisine and culture to Chengdu people in the future.
