“Chengdu has done well in becoming international. I know half of the Fortune Global 500 companies have made presence in the city, which provides an excellent business environment for foreign investors from around the world,” said Mr. Geoff Raby, former Australian ambassador to China, in an interview with Chengdu Daily during his visit to Chengdu on November 26.
During his term as the Australian ambassador to China from 2007 to 2011, Mr. Raby focused on promoting the cooperation between Chengdu and Australia in various fields and pushed forward the establishment of the Australian Consulate General in Chengdu. He was awarded the title “Honorary Citizen of Chengdu” in 2012 because of his great efforts to enhance the mutual partnership.
Mr. Raby said that the newly-established consulate general plays an important role in facilitating the mutual cooperation between China and Australia, and the negotiations on free trade agreement (FTA) signed between the two parties are a good chance for Chengdu to further cultural exchange and trade with Australia.
“Chengdu is already an international city. To get more international, it still needs to pay more attention to preserving its traditional culture, upgrading its urban landscaping, as well as maintaining its coordinated and sustainable development in economic and social growth, and ecological protection,” Mr.Roby stressed.
