Chengdu an Active Role in “China Single’s Day” Shopping Spree

Chengdu's online sales surged during the China's Single's Day shopping spree, with two counties under its administration ranking high in the list of top contributing county-level areas across China.
A report by China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba shows that turnover of online sales in the “China Single’s Day” shopping spree hit a record high this year and Chengdu was a very important regional countributor to the sales volume, with Shuangliu County and Pixian County under the administration of Chengdu holding the 5th and 10th place respectively in the list of top contributing county-level areas across China.
The province of Sichuan held the 6th place among provinces and autonomous regions in terms sales volume.
Customers from 217 countries and regions outside the Chinese mainland joined the shopping spree.
Alibaba reported a turnover of over 57.1 billion yuan (over $9 billion) on the “China Single’s Day”, the world’s biggest online retail sales day.
The day of “China Single’s Day” — Nov. 11 — is also called China’s Singles’ Day and has evolved into an online shopping spree for all in recent years, as e-commerce operators stepped in to tap the buying potential of bachelors and discount-savvy netizens.

“Double 11” Shopping Spree

November 11, a date with 4 Arabic numerals “1”, which looks like a stick, is called Guanggunjie (Bachelor’s Day or Single’s Day) in China since “stick” (pronounced “guanggun” in Chinese) means “a single” in Chinese. The informal festival, originated from university campus and widely spread via the Internet and other media, gradually forms a kind of Single’s Day culture. Through the promotion of e-commerce companies, the Single’s Day has become a shopping spree in the country.
