“Made in CD” Toyota Prado 2.7L SUVs Put on Market Nationwide

The rollout ceremony for Toyota Prado 2.7L SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) was held in the Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (SFTM) Chengdu plant on March 30. The product was put on market across China on the evening of the day.
The SFTM is Toyota’s first joint venture project for vehicle production in China. Its annual output capacity will increase to 50,000 vehicles after the plant introduced the Prado 2.7L SUV manufacturing project, which was invested with RMB480million (approx. US$77.42million) and started in 2013.
According to Chengdu Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology (CMCEIT), the city’s annual vehicle output was around 160,000 in January and February this year, generating a revenue from major operations of RMB21billion (approx. US$3.39billion).
So far, there have been 267 auto enterprises above the designated scale in the city, and the development pattern of its auto industry, which is focused on the Chengdu Economic and Technological Development Zone, has taken shape. A complete automobiles and parts system involving sedans, coaches and SUVs, etc., made by FAW-Volkswagen (FAW-VW), SFTM, Volvo Car Corporation, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile Co., Ltd. (DPCA), and Sinotruk Chengdu Wangpai Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd., have been established well. According to the CMCEIT, currently, the city can make 2.1 million vehicles in total annually, and it aims to become a vehicle production base with a yearly capacity of 3 million.
