The 22nd session of the General Assembly of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) will be held September 11-16 in Chengdu.
The Information Office of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) announced on May 18 that the biennial event will be jointly undertaken by CNTA, Sichuan Provincial Government, Chengdu Municipal Government, and Sichuan Provincial Tourism Development Committee.
As a top professional event in the global tourism industry, the event will bring together ministerial VIPs and more than 800 delegates from over 100 countries.
At the 21st session of the UNWTO General Assembly, held in Medellin, Colombia, Chengdu won, through voting, the bid to host the 22nd session two years later. Thus Chengdu became the second city in China to be the venue for the grand event, which was once convened in 2003 in Beijing. At the 22nd session, the organization's new secretary general will be elected, and the world's latest development in the tourist sector and new blueprint for the industry will be announced.
The UNWTO, the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsibilities, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, is the leading international organization in the field of tourism, which promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. All of its member states attach great value to its sessions, and previously all host countries' heads of states or government leaders were present at and addressed the opening ceremonies. A video of the mayor of Chengdu to extend a warm welcome to the guests will be aired at the 22nd session.
During the event in Chengdu, CNTA and UNWTO will co-host a ministerial roundtable focusing on China's "Belt and Road" initiative, and co-advocate to establish an alliance of cooperation in tourism among the countries and regions along the Belt and Road.
"I believe that the 22nd session of UNWTO General Assembly to be hosted in Chengdu will open a new page in the history of China and UNWTO, as well as of the global tourist industry," said Zoltan Somogyi, UNWTO Executive Director, during his visit in Chengdu, who also showed a strong confidence in the city's capabilities to offer top services for all guests to the event.
