Sustainable Reforms for Innovation

Authors: Go Chengdu

In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
Its resolution recognizes "the importance of international tourism, and particularly of the designation of an international year of sustainable tourism for development, in fostering better understanding among people everywhere, in leading to a greater awareness of the rich heritage of various civilization and in bringing about a better appreciation of the inherent values of different cultures, thereby contributing to the strengthening of peace in the world."
Chengdu actively responded to the resolution and rapidly launched a series of measures and actions to reform and innovate its travel sector, in hopes of enhancing the competitive edge of the industry.
Strolling on the busy streets lined with modern and stylish high-rises, visitors can feel the city's prosperity, vitality and cultural inclusiveness everywhere.
The Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu, adjacent to the centuries-old Daci Monastery in the city center, is home to hundreds of international fashion and lifestyle brands. The pubs and bars around the Jiuyan Bridge cultural block are popular places for locals to relax themselves and get away from the boring daily routines. When tradition meets modernity, the blend of classic beauty and new trends excites people's imagination of the future of the city.
With Chengdu's accelerating pace of going global, more and more modern tourist infrastructure and facilities are springing up in the city, which keeps upgrading its quality of services for tourists.
Those who have visited the Mt. Qingcheng-Dujiangyan scenic area are highly impressed by the newly-built unisex public toilets there. Also called gender-inclusive, gender-neutral or all-gender, the facilities benefit people with disabilities, the elderly, and anyone else who may require the assistance from someone of another gender, including parents who wish to accompany their children to the washroom.
According to official statistics, 26 toilets in the city were renovated in this year's first half, making the city more tourist-friendly. The effort was spoken highly of by the National Tourist Administration and designated as a model to be promoted all over the country.
