"I have been to many charming cities in the world. If you ask me which cities in the world have the closest relationship with poetry, or which cities themselves is part of poetry, I will not hesitate to tell you that it is Paris in France and Chengdu in China," said Jidi Majia, vice chairman of the Chinese Writers Association and director of the organizing committee of the Chengdu International Poetry Week.
He said that Chengdu is a city with a profound poetry tradition in Chinese history. Many great poets in ancient times lived in Chengdu, which itself is also a treasure land for growing and raising a group of outstanding poets.
Luo Qiang, mayor of Chengdu, said poetry has become the cultural gene of Chengdu, and it has become the unique temperament of the citizens in Chengdu.
He hopes that the city will become a fertile land for the creation of the world's poets and a bridge for world cultural exchange, and thus making greater contributions to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
"I often travel between Paris and Chengdu. In my view, the two cities are both poetic cities, and are very close in temperament and character," said Shucai, Chinese poet and translator, who was also entitled "Education Knight" by the French Government.
"The creation of such an international poetry week requires great ambition and courage, and Chengdu deserves such an event," he said.
French poet Yvon Le Men, who is a big fan of ancient Chinese poet Du Fu, has come for the poetry week for the second year. He has written a book about Du Fu after he participated in the First Chengdu International Poetry Week.
Yvon said Chengdu and Paris have much in common. "Both cities have profound historical heritage, and is home to many internationally renowned writers," he said.
"In France, the influence of Chinese poetry and poets, especially Chengdu poetry and poets is expanding. I hope that in the future, more Chengdu poets will be invited to France to promote cultural exchanges between the two sides," he added.
