Merkel Starts 7th China Visit from Chengdu

As of July 5, Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Federal Republic of Germany arrived in Chengdu starting her 7th China visit.
Chengdu was the first leg of her three-day trip to China this time, during which she was accompanied by a large official delegation and a high-profile business delegation including executives of Siemens, Volkswagen, Airbus, Lufthansa and Deutsche Bank.
On July 6, Merkel attended and addressed the opening ceremony of a forum on new urbanization between China (Sichuan) and Germany.
At the forum, she said that western China has its own unique opportunities during the country's urbanization drive.
The forum was jointly sponsored by the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government and theMinistry of Economy and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany. It attracted over 240 participants including executives of well-known German enterprises and German companies in China, as well as representatives from Sichuan. They shared views on development of new urbanization, investment and cooperation, and opportunities of industrial growth.

Chengdu was listed as the most livable city on the Chinese mainland in a recent report issued by the Asian Development Bank. Though her schedule was very tight, Merkel took the chance of being in the city to experience the local people’s life and visited the Shenxianshu Farm Produce Market, where she bought a bag of Pixian bean paste, two spoons of pepper powder and 50 grams of anis, all of which are key seasoning of typical Sichuan food. After that, Merkel went to a traditional Sichuan restaurant and learnt to cook a famous Sichuan dish-Kung Pao Chicken.
At the end of her trip in Chengdu, Merkel toured an FAW-Volkswagen joint production plant in the city, marking the prelude to a program of building electric charging stations for cars and infrastructure in China.
While visiting the plant, Merkel sat in a new Jetta sedan, which is the factory's star product, and asked questions about the car. She also visited the plant's training workshop.
On the afternoon of July 6, Merkel and her delegations flied to Beijing.

International Air Routes

A relevant official from the Chengdu Municipal Logistics Office said that Chengdu has so far opened 232 passenger and cargo air routes, including 76 international (regional) ones covering major cities in Europe, the US and Australia-Asia region. In 2015, much more international flight routes will be put into operation, which will solidify the city's status as China's fourth aviation city.
