According to an announcement released by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on April 30, Lucky Air had planned to open a direct air link between Chengdu and Russia’s Irkutsk in July.
The airline planned to use B737-800 aircraft to operate the weekly service. Up to now, Sichuan Airlines has launched a non-stop link between Chengdu and Moscow. Tibet Airlines has also planned for another one between the city and Sochi in the near term. The opening of these three air routes are believed to further the exchanges between the Chinese city and Russia in economy and trade, tourism and culture.
Irkutsk is the capital of Irkutsk Oblast and one of the largest cities in Siberia. Located in the south of Baikal, it is the closest city to the lake. Recently, CAAC has approved Russia's VIM Airline to launch the Moscow-Chengdu route and S7 Airlines the Irtutsk-Chengdu one.
