Chengdu Shows Its Cultural Glamour in London

The opening ceremony for a cultural promotion themed the partnership between Chengdu and London was staged in London’s Hyde Park May 19 local time.
The week-long event, sponsored by the Chengdu Municipal People’s Government, the Embassy of People’s Republic of China in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, attracted about 150 celebrities from all walks of life in the UK.
At the ceremony, Chengdu artists gave colorful cultural performances featuring the city’s tea culture, face-changing, one of stunts of Sichuan Opera, traditional puppet art and show of Shu Embroidery costumes, etc.
This event was aimed to promote Chengdu’s investment potential, traditional culture and tourist resources in the UK,improve the city image and further the mutual cooperation in all areas.


Heathrow Express Becomes” Chengdu 72-hour Express”
An official of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chengdu revealed that to give more British people a better understanding of the benefits of Chengdu’s 72-hour Visa Free Policy, Chengdu and London have worked together and renamed the Heathrow Express, the fastest transfer between Heathrow Airport terminals and central London, as “Chengdu 72-hour Express” for some time.
Chengdu Tea Culture Captivates Londoners
Teahouse, one of Chengdu’s cultural features, is a unique window into the local tea culture and Chengdu people’s leisurely pace of life. During Chengdu’s week-long cultural promotion in London, which was launched on May 19, the city set up an outdoor teahouse on the famous Covent Garden Street in central London May 23 local time, to enable the Londoners to experience Chengduers’ laidback everyday life and folk customs.
Mr. Owen,a 50-year-old Englishman,first tasted the strong flavor of the Chengdu in a traditional porcelain teacup which consists of a tray, a bowl and a lid. He was greatly amazed by the performances of a highly skillful“tea doctor”(attendant),---- the Chinese tea ceremony, a ritualized way of making tea by a set of eye-catching and breath-taking rituals, tools and gestures implying an artistic artificiality, abstractness, symbolism and formalism.
The outdoor teahouse attracted numerous local people to enjoy Chengdu’s profound tea culture and learn more information on Chengdu’s tourist resources and its 72-hour Visa Free Policy.
According to the Chengdu Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, various activities including a Chengdu picture exhibition at the Heathrow Airport and a series of road shows at Covent Garden, will be held till May 25.

More travelers flying overseas from Chengdu

An increasing number of people are taking international flights from Chengdu as the city seeks a more global presence. Latest data from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport show that the passenger load for flights from Chengdu to London and Amsterdam stayed beyond 90 percent from Jan 1 to 10.
