"The establishment of the primary school and kindergarten, as well as the partnership between Chengdu and the University of Waikato will deepen the friendship between the two cities, which, I believe, is one of the best practices of China's 'Belt and Road' Initiative," said Mr. Andrew King, Mayor of Hamilton, in a video to congratulate the opening of the schools. He expressed that he feels highly proud of the international education project working together with Chengdu, and hopes to strengthen the mutual collaboration in more fields with Chengdu in the future.
Chengdu established a sister-city tie with Hamilton in May 2015, and inked an agreement with it in 2016, to co-establish an elementary school and a kindergarten here in the city in 2016. "The sister-city relationship has brought new opportunities to and injected more vitality into the mutual exchanges in international education between the two cities. And the two co-built schools will give fresh impetus to the mutual relations," said an official from the Chengdu Municipal Government's Foreign Affairs Office, adding that "The schools will serve as a tie of friendship between the people of both cities, and offer Chengdu citizens greater access to the educational and cultural resources of New Zealand."
