Moving up One Place in National Rankings
On December 10th, 2015, the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport's annual passenger traffic hit 40 million, creating an all-time high and making Chengdu the real "fourth biggest airport" in the Chinese mainlandand the only city in central and western China whose air passenger volume had reached 40 million. It marks that Chengdu has stood out from all second-tier cities and become the aviation hub in central and western China.
An official from the CAAC said that over the recent years, Sichuan's civil aviation industry has been developing quickly, showing a strong developing momentum in Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport's volume and international transport business. Statistics from the website, one of the most renowned and largest Chinese civil aviation web portals in the world, show that in the Chinese mainland there are 9 airports each with an annual passenger throughput of over 30 million and 26 ones each with more than 10 million.
Voices of Industry Insiders
Shuangliu Int'l Airport is Developing Fast
Zou Maogong, a professional in the civil aviation industry, said that the civil aviation industry is most closely associated with the new economy among all modes of transportation. Comparing the development data in recent years, it is easy to find that the growth speed of a large-sized airport (in large part referring to its passenger and cargo throughput) is highly related to the local economic growth speed and pace of economic transformation, as well as whether local government treats the civil aviation industry as a strategic pillar sector. "The airports in Chengdu, Chongqing and Zhengzhou have been developing very fast over the recent years, benefiting much from these aspects. According to the growth and rankings of the domestic airports in the past few years, it is noted that in China’s civil aviation industry a competitive landscape will be seen between highly-developed Beijing and Shanghai, between the fast-developing eastern and slow-growing western regions, as well as among major cities which will vie for the title of regional hub."
In addition, the CAAC official indicated that as an international air hub for the opening-up of southwest China and the "Belt and Road" Initiative, the Chengdu Tianfu International Airport will play an important part in the country's civil aviation network. The CAAC will strongly support the construction and development of the airport, giving full play to the fundamental and leading functions of the civil aviation industry.

Chengdu Strives to Become Int’l Aviation Hub

The statistics show the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport ranked fourth in the country and Chengdu is praised as the “Fourth Aviation City in China.”
