On December 4, the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2) project was granted the Jeme Tien-You Award, which is the most prestigious award in the field of civil engineering construction in China and named after distinguished Chinese railway engineer Zhan Tianyou (Jeme Tien-You, 1861-1919).
Designed by the Chengdu branch of the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., the terminal, among all 11 prize-winning projects involving construction engineering, was the only one from Sichuan Province.
An official with the company said that the roof of the central processing hall in the steel-structured terminal is formed by 16 bamboo leave-shaped structures, each of which has a span of 125.2 meters and weighs 600 tons. The design of the roof without support is unique among all airport terminals in the world.
“The central processing hall is a super-long pre-stressed concrete structure. The largest part of it has no expansion joint and is 496 meters long (the length of the pier terminal is 176 meters). It was the longest seamless structure in China in the time of its construction. The design-type concrete specially used for the project which was developed by the company and some universities was a brand new product both at home and abroad ,”the official added.
The Jeme Tien-You Award was initiated by the China Civil Engineering Society in 1999. Presented annually, it is aimed to recognize outstanding scientific innovation and application of new technologies for engineering projects in China.
