5 Foreign Experts Win Tianfu Friendship Award

The opening ceremony for the 2017 Western China Overseas Hi-Tech and High Talents Conference took place September 12 in Chengdu.
The 6-day event focused on the areas including new energy & material, IT, bio-pharmacy, energy saving and environmental protection, natural disaster prevention and relief, and development of smart city. Over 600 experts and scholars from 33 countries and regions attended the conference.
At the opening ceremony, Steven Chu, winner of Nobel Physics Prize, foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and physics professor of Stanford University, delivered a speech on how outstanding talents discover those better than themselves. Robert King Merton, a Nobel Economics Prize winner and member of US National Academy of Sciences, addressed the audience on the innovation of financial service system. Harald zur Hausen, winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and virology professor of Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nurnberg, made a speech on the reduction of cancer risk. And Daniel Kammen, winner of Nobel Peace Prize and professor of UC Berkeley, gave a talk about the revolution of clean energy.
In addition, at the ceremony, Lucia Clara Orlandini from Italy, along with other four foreign experts, was given the Tianfu Friendship Award.
Statistics show that during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), every year over 10,000 overseas experts and professionals worked, on invitation, in Sichuan in such fields as economics, science & technology, culture, and education.
Tianfu Friendship Award, established by the Sichuan provincial government, is the highest award conferred annually to foreign specialists who make significant contribution to Sichuan's economic and social development and opening up.
