A Belgian Finds True Love in Chengdu

Authors: Go Chengdu

The inspiring story of a Belgian-Chinese couple shows that love can transcend all boundaries.
Tom, from Belgium, married a Sichuan lady, Lily, four years ago; now he has settled down in Chengdu and sees the city his second hometown.
No barrier on the path to true love
Tom used to work at Ghent Volvo Car Company in his hometown in Belgium before he met Lily.
The couple first met when Tom was in China on business in 2013 and they soon fell in love.
After returning to Belgium, every month Tom would send Lily a box of handmade chocolates. After sending the 12th box, in the year of 2016, Tom decided to move to Chengdu to live with Lily and start a brand of Belgian chocolate, Choclito (Choc for chocolate, Li for Lily, To for Tom).
Business is beyond borders
Tom learned to make chocolate with his family when he was 10 years old. In his view, every household in Belgium can make chocolate.
Tom, who owns the company, began his journey in Belgium, working in his three-generation-old family business in Belgian chocolate.
Tom noted that Chengdu is endowed with rich entrepreneurial climate. They import all the finest raw materials from Belgium. Every single chocolate is made by hand using traditional, Belgian methods and advanced techniques. They craft every figure like a piece of art. Now Tom's chocolate shop in Chengdu is full of creative designs, such as diverse pandas, high heels, vintage cars and roses.
Happy life in Chengdu
Tom now sees Chengdu as his second hometown. He says he wants to share every moment here with his wife Lily.
"We've been to many places in Chengdu and other parts of Sichuan, including the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Qingcheng Mountain, Mount Emei, Leshan Giant Buddha, and so on," recalled Tom, "My favorite place is Huaxi Farmland, which boasts beautiful natural sceneries."
"We chose to open our Choclito company in Chengdu without hesitation," Tom explained, holding Lily's hand, "Chengdu has been a romantic and comfortable city since the ancient times. It is traditional but not conservative, lively but not noisy, everywhere in the city is teemed with unique culture trait - tolerance, enthusiasm, open-minded atmosphere. We can feel a strong sense of belonging and happiness in Chengdu."
Their declaration of love:
The more I know you, the more I love you.
