Standing an Egg on Its End at the Spring Equinox
It is a popular game in China to stand an egg on end on the day of the Spring Equinox, which has become a worldwide game. Some 4000 years ago, ancient Chinese people celebrated spring’s coming by standing eggs. It is said, “When the Spring Equinox comes, eggs are ready to be balanced.”
Why did people balance eggs on end at the Spring Equinox?
It is said that it's easy to stand an egg on its end at the Spring Equinox, because some laws of science hide in the game. The axis of the earth and its orbit around the sun make it just in a kind of balance of forces on the day, which makes the egg easy to be balanced on end. Additionally, the day in mid-spring with mild weather and blooming flowers makes people feel comfortable, think quickly and move nimbly, which helps people stand eggs on end.
