With the advent of the Major Cold, the traditional Spring Festival is around the corner and people begin the New Year preparations such as shopping, cleaning, decorating, and so on.
The Major Cold (Da Han, 大寒 in Chinese) literally means the weather is cold to the extreme. It is the last term of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms (a supplementary system in the Chinese calendar to guide farm work) and falls on sometime around Jan. 20, when the sun moves to the celestial longitude of 300 degrees. Though the meteorological data in China show that the lowest temperature in a year is usually recorded during the Minor Cold period rather than the period of the Major Cold in most areas of the country (except some coastal areas), the temperature may drop to its lowest point in the period of the Major Cold in some years.
