Tiexiangsi Water Street is a less well-known tourist site compared with some hot spots in the city, such as the Wide & Narrow Alleys and Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li, but is gaining popularity since its debut in 2013 for its distinctive styles and agreeable environment.
The overall ambience makes it a very suitable site for sightseeing, meeting, dining, drinking and enjoying fashion and culture, while visitors enjoy the special quietness that is rarely found in other tourist attractions. Also, the traditional designs of the water street give visitors a taste of old Chengdu.
Tiexiangsi Water Street is named after Tiexiangsi Temple (Iron-cast Statues Temple), which was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
The Water Street is nestled in a quiet whereabouts surrounded by high-rises of commercial buildings and residential communities, with the Xiaojiahe River running north-south through the whole area. The six bridges over the river are the reproductions of bridges in old Chengdu.
Vehicles are prohibited to in the area and visitors can have a carefree stroll on the street, which is lined with boutique shops, tea houses, restaurants, bars, bookstores and coffee shops. Here you can also find a Starbucks ― arguably the most beautiful Starbucks outlet in the city.
The art galleries often put on interesting shows. The outdoor teahouse on the street is a must-visit, where you can witness the typical lifestyle of locals. Not far from the Water Street there are Chinese and Western restaurants providing diverse cuisines.
