Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (the Panda Base) is probably the most important base in the world dedicated to the protection of the giant pandas.
The Panda Base is located in the northeast suburb of Chengdu, about 13 km from the downtown center. It opened in 1988 and now includes a research center, an open research laboratory, a veterinary hospital, an enclosure, and a giant panda activity ground. It is probably the most important base in the world dedicated to the protection of the giant pandas and other endangered species.
Chengdu is the only metropolitan city in the world that is close to the giant panda habitats and the Panda Base is a National AAAA tourist scenic area, where the relocation and protection of endangered species including the giant pandas are carried out.

Giant panda delivers twin cubs in Chengdu

CHENGDU - A giant panda gave birth on Monday to twin cubs in Chengdu, capital city of Southwest China's Sichuan province. Yaxing gave birth to the twins -- a female and male -- at 8:13 am and 8:44 am at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, scientists told Xinhua. They are the first set of panda twins to be born this year in the city.
