Chengdu, Luang Prabang Officially Establish Friendly City-Province Tie-GoChengdu

Chengdu and Luang Prabang, Laos, officially established a friendly city-province relationship on March 15 (Laos time), according to sources from Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.

So far, Chengdu has forged sister-city relationships with 33 cities, and friendly and cooperative ties with 44 cities across the globe.

Luang Prabang is the political, educational and business center in northern Laos. Its agriculture and traditional handicraft industries are well developed. As a renowned tourist attraction in Laos, the old town of Luang Prabang was listed as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1995 for its unique urban structure and well-preserved architecture built during the European colonial period. It is also a popular travel destination for Chengdu residents.

In 2015, the total foreign trade volume between Chengdu and Laos reached USD46.28 million, a year-on-year increase of 38.34%. Up to now, Sichuan has approved 30 companies and Chengdu has approved 8 ones to invest in Laos, mainly involving mining, electronics, optical cable, and silk sectors.

In December 2014, Lao Airlines launched a direct air route between Chengdu and Luang Prabang, offering three services every two weeks. And Chengdu became the first city in southwestern China to have a regular air link to Luang Prabang.
