Two little pandas in the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding were given new names – the elder brother is called Mao Zhu, and the younger sister is called Mao Sun.
After a two-month online voting, two baby pandas in the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding were given new names – the elder brother is called Mao Zhu (a kind of bamboo favored by pandas), and the younger sister is called Mao Sun (in Chinese, meaning a bamboo shoot).
The names were given by an Internet user, who said she wanted the names to be homophones for pandas’ favorite food, so that the two baby pandas could have enough bamboo to eat in their lives and grow up healthily.
Currently, Mao Zhu and Mao Sun are both in good health. Usually, the meek brother likes to lie in the sun while his vivacious sister prefers to play with her friends.
The twins have become celebrities since their birth on July 26, 2014 because they have appeared on an online live show since then. In the past four months, the two were called Mao Qius (downy balls) by netizens who had watched the video clips on their daily lives online.
