Chengdu rises in event hosting competitiveness ranking

Authors: China Daily

Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan province, has beaten its peers in central and western China again in terms of hosting exhibitions and conventions, according to the latest China City Conference and Exhibition Industry Competitiveness Index report released on Nov 10.
According to the report, Chengdu overtook Shenzhen, Guangdong province, for the first time, to be the fourth most competitive city in the exhibition industry in China, after Shanghai, Beijing and Guangdong province's capital Guangzhou. The index is prepared by the China Convention, Exhibition and Event Society.
"The index is the most authoritative and scientific evaluation of the exhibition industry in China, which will help cities to improve their competitiveness in event hosting," said Chu Xiangyin, executive vice-chairman of the society.
"Chengdu's ranking rose in the past two years, which demonstrates the city's achievements in supporting the exhibition industry's development," said Chen Zeyan, executive deputy director of the academic committee of the China Convention and Exhibition Society.
Chen said that Chengdu shows strong competitiveness in providing professional services, education services and government services to exhibition related parties, which made it rank higher than Shenzhen.
Chengdu has reported strong economic growth over the past few years. Statistics from local authorities show that the city's GDP in the first nine months of this year reached 972.54 billion yuan ($147.45 billion), an increase of 8.1 percent from last year.
Local officials pointed out that a city's exhibition industry development is related to the region's economic development situation. As such, the competitiveness ranking can help to refl ect a city's economic development over the past few years.
Supported by strong economic growth, Chengdu is emerging as an internationally renowned exhibition hub, according to officials from the Chengdu bureau of expo.
The city, with thousands of years of history, has hosted a series of events with strong global reputations, including the 2017 Tencent Global Partner Conference, the 22nd General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the 2013 Fortune Global Forum and the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting.
"China's exhibition industry is expanding globally, which needs support from major exhibition cities. Chengdu will play a more significant role in supporting China's exhibition industry development and will have a prosperous future," Chen said.
Chengdu is taking a leading role nationwide in exhibition center construction, market cultivation, arranging branding activities and resource allocation, Chen said.
Looking forward, the exhibition industry will strongly support Chengdu's economic industry upgrade and transformation. It will attract more professionals, capital and information to the city, according to the local authorities.
In the first ten months of 2017, Chengdu hosted 525 large-scale events with a total exhibition area hit 3.2 million square meters. The total income from the exhibition industry reached more than 80 billion yuan, an increase of 11.9 percent year-on-year.
