Chengdu convened a press conference on the 2019 World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) July 26, briefing on the preparations the city has made for the event.
The biennial WPFG was initiated in 1985. To date, it has been held for 17 times, including 12 in North America, 3 in Europe and 2 in Oceania.
On July 31, 2013, the Chengdu Municipal People's Government won the bid for the athletic event, which will be first hosted in Asia. 58 sports events will take place on August 8-18 next year at close to 30 stadiums in Chengdu's 9 districts (cities) and counties.
The preparatory committee revealed the emblem of the games at the conference. According to the committee, it will recruit and train more than 1,800 games-time volunteers and 3,000 city volunteers, and offer hundreds of interpreters of different languages for athletes and distinguished guests.
Up to now, police and fire fighters from nearly 30 countries and regions across the globe have expressed intentions to participate in the event, which is open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world. Applicants can sign up on the official website for the event in November.
