Chengdu was granted the UNESCO Learning City Award recently.
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) announced January 31 ten winners of the 2019 UNESCO Learning City Award on its official website. The ten cities, Aswan (Egypt), Chengdu (China), Heraklion (Greece), Ibadan (Nigeria), Medellín (Colombia), Melitopol (Ukraine), Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), Santiago (Mexico), Seodaemun-gu (Republic of Korea), and Sønderborg (Denmark) will receive the award at the 2019 International Conference on Learning Cities in Colombia in early October.
The UNESCO Learning City Award was established as part of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2015. It is an international biennial award recognizing cities which show exemplary progress and commitment to promote education and lifelong learning at the local level. Up to now, a total of 38 cities from around the globe have won the award, including China's Beijing and Hangzhou.
Mr. David Atchoarena, Director of the UIL, visited Chengdu in last October and spoke highly of the city. "Chengdu is one of the world's models for promoting lifelong learning. It has a great atmosphere of lifelong learning, and its efforts and practices in promoting quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all at the local level is of great significance for its economic, social and cultural progress and development," he said.
