Chengdu, an Ideal Place for Startups

Wu Xin, general manager of Chengdu-based Envee Inflight Entertainment Co., Ltd., led the company to explore untouched business opportunities in the air ingeniously.
On June 15th, CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) announced that Hainan Airlines had applied for operating three weekly round-trip flights from Chengdu to Los Angeles using B787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, starting from September. Passengers taking the flights can enjoy the latest inflight entertainment system developed in Chengdu. Wu Xin, general manager of Chengdu-based Envee Inflight Entertainment Co., Ltd., led the company to explore untouched business opportunities in the air in his own way.
"In fact, we reached a strategic cooperation agreement with Hainan Airlines last November to embed Envee inflght entertainment products into the aircraft's entertainment system. The airlines' passengers can experience Envee game softwares and applications from June this year," said Wu.
One progressive leap from start to going public
The company's office in Tianfu Software Park now covers 1000 square meters, but one year ago less than 300 square meters. It has also built the one and only simulation space for inflight experience in China and a lab for aviation test. "After debugging all programs in the lab, our staff install the products into the simulation cabin, experience them as passengers, and keep improving them until they become perfect," Wu explained. He said the company built an inflight WiFi service lab, which covers up to 600 square meters, where new inflight WiFi products and technologies are showcased and tested.
Before setting up Envee, Wu had started a software company in Shanghai, which was later acquired by the largest game publisher in the Netherlands. After having made in-depth studies on potential projects and business opportunities between 2007 and 2010, Wu co-founded, with one of his university classmates, a technology company specializing in R & D of mobile Internet products in Chengdu Tianfu Software Park. "Later I met my current partners with some experience in the Internet + aviation industry. We share common goals in developing the onboard entertainment sector. " In January 2016, Envee successfully went public on China's National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ). Wu said, "Chengdu is such a blessed place for me and all other startups."
