A delegate of 11 teachers and students from Perth, Australia, joined in the closing ceremony held on April 29 in Chengdu upon the completion of their week-long visit to Chengdu and expressed the wish to come back to the city to “learn more about local culture”.
The Australian delegate were members of a cultural exchange program called Embrace Chengdu ― Home of Pandas between Chengdu and Perth, which established sister-city relationship in 2012, and during their visit to Chengdu they had classes at schools, visited cultural and historical sites and learned on local handicrafts of the city.
“Local culture has a rich and long history, interesting and thrilling,” said students of the group, “We have learned so much about the Chinese culture; we played Taichi Boxing, visited places of interest, and had lectures on pottery. The pandas are so cute and lovely!”
“We’d like to come back to Chengdu to see our Chinese partners and learn more about the city.”
Officials from Chengdu Municipal Department of Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs and Chengdu Municipal Education Bureau said the program is an important platform by the two sister cities to promote mutual understanding and exchange in culture and education.
“I have been here for four times. Chengdu is a beautiful city and I really enjoy the culture of the city. I’m very much impressed with the Jinsha Site Museum, which is the showcase of the city’s long and brilliant history,” said head of the delegate Warwick Mathews.
The closing ceremony of the program was held at Xindu No.1 Middle School in northern Chengdu, at which colorful performances were staged, including Taichi exercises, Sichuan Opera stunts, and the song of Waltzing Matilda by the visiting Australian students.
This October, Shenton College of Perth will send a delegate of the program to its sister school in Chengdu, the Middle School Affiliated to Sichuan University.
