In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
The city has launched the reform of managing local freelance tour guides. Here in the city, visitors can search the information of, and make comments and complaints on the services of local travel sector practitioners, online and/or on mobile Apps.
On October 1, 2016, the city's website on services of local tour guides was put into operation. It enables travel agencies and visitors to select tour guides and pay the service fees through a third party. Up to now, the site has listed 21,868 guides and 473 agencies, and has served over 5 million people.
With the improvement of people's quality of life, tourists have more and higher requirements for travel services. So far, Dujiangyan City, Qionglai City, Chongzhou City, Wenjiang District, Jinjiang District as well as Xinjin County and Pujiang County, all of which are under the administration of Chengdu, have been approved by the state tourism administration as national models of tourist services.
The districts and counties will continue to reform and innovate their ways of managing the local tourist markets and services.
According to a document released recently by the Chengdu city government, the city will give stronger support to the reform and innovation of the local tourist sector. Any department making outstanding achievements will be awarded a one-time prize of RMB500, 000.
Chengdu's plan to develop the tourist industry during the national 13th Five-Year Plan period states that it will make the industry more innovation-driven, encourage developing new tourist products, refresh business models, and optimize the tourist resources.
According to the plan, Chengdu aims not only to be a major national tourist city, but also one of the world's influential travel destinations with typical Chinese and Chengdu cultural features. To this end, it will focus on developing high-end tourist products and services, involving sightseeing, leisure and recreation, shopping, gastronomy, events (exhibitions and conferences), cultural creativity sectors, as well as people's health and wellness.
