Chengdu is among the first batch of pilot cities to test the 5G network in China.
Chengdu holds unique advantages in developing the internet audio-visual industry as it's an important player in China's media and electronic information sectors. The construction and application of a 5G network has further strengthened this superiority.
By standing in front of ultra-high definition televisions at the exhibition hall of the city's Film and Television Technology Valley, visitors can watch the production of Sichuan Shu embroidery in a workshop 20 kilometers away through 5G network transmission and 8K live broadcasting.
Backed by 5G technology, Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, is striving to create a world-class industrial ecosystem covering the fields of film, television, art and fashion.

At the end of March, the city introduced key projects - including a State-level laboratory of super-high definition, a media convergence research center, a 5G ultra-high definition research institute and audiovisual center, and a 5G pan-entertainment and media video center - into a film, television, cultural and creative industrial zone in Chengdu's Pidu district. The total contract value of these projects reached 2.82 billion yuan ($407.94 million).
The industrial zone includes a 4-square kilometer core area and is one of China's first platforms testing 5G plus 8K video transmission. So far, it has attracted more than 50 companies, including Beijing-based Perfect World Education and Huajiao, a video livestreaming platform in China, with a total investment of 26 billion yuan.
When construction on the core area is finished, it will be able to house more than 300 film and television production teams, host various film and television festivals, and also aid the shooting and editing of 10 movies, 20 animations and 1,000 TV episodes annually.
Chengdu is among the first batch of pilot cities to test the 5G network in China. Last year, it built several 5G base stations and launched a large-scale network featuring coverage on the Second Ring Road. The city also tested virtual reality live transmission at its giant panda breeding and research center. It provided live 5G plus satellite television broadcasts at a cultural park and Chunxi Road, one of the major shopping streets in the center of Chengdu.

In January this year, Chengdu put China's first 5G subway station into service. Taipingyuan Station on the city's subway line 10 is now covered by a high-speed Wi-Fi signal converted from the 5G network. It is the country's first 5G digital indoor distribution system network.
On March 29, China Mobile Sichuan, with Chengdu Metro, China Tower Sichuan and Huawei, managed to expand the coverage of 5G network to the track section between Taipingyuan Station and Cujin Station. This is the world's first subway line section equipped with a 5G network. The achievement is considered indicative of Chengdu's leadership in 5G construction in China and the world.
The initiative is the foundation for 5G of the whole route, according to China Mobile Sichuan.

Through years of effort, Chengdu has created a favorable environment for 5G development. It is home to research and development centers of many Chinese and overseas telecom giants such as Huawei, Nokia Shanghai Bell, Sony Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks.
The city also boasts the China Telecom's western information center, China Mobile's industrial research institute and China Unicom's 5G innovation center. It has gathered a group of cloud service providers and sci-tech companies.
The artificial intelligence innovation center, located at the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park, for example, attracts dozens of AI and 5G projects with a total investment exceeding 10 billion yuan. More than 10 projects have started construction and a research institute invested in by a digital services provider New H3C is one of them.
"The Chengdu research institute will focus on the innovation and industrialization of 5G technology and the next-generation memory technology, which are key to our competitiveness in global technological innovation in the coming two to five years," said You Xuejun, senior vice-president and chief technology officer of New H3C.
In February, Chengdu issued a 5G industrial development plan. According to the plan, the city will take the lead nationwide in the large-scale commercial use of 5G by 2020. It aims to realize in-depth integration of industrial applications and form model industrial clusters by 2022.
The city will also pour more resources into the construction of industrial zones in the fields of virtual and augmented reality and 4K and 8K ultra-high-definition resolutions to create a 5G internet audio-visual industry, according to the plan.
