The information office and foreign affairs office of the Chengdu Municipal People’s Government launched a media tour to the city's international sister cities on December 10. The week-long program is aimed to further the partnership between Chengdu and Perth, Australia and Hamilton, New Zealand.
Chengdu, Perth to Cement Bilateral Education Ties
Chengdu and Perth have had an in-depth collaboration in the area of education in recent years, and the two cities will expand the ties to higher education, said Mr. Mike Ryan, a senior education officer from Western Australia in the Perth’s Kings Park, the largest city park in southern hemisphere.
Mr. Ryan expressed that Perth shares many similarities with Chengdu in terms of their laid-back lifestyle, excellent ecological environment and favorable geographic location, etc, which make it easy for the two cities understand each other and cooperate in many fields. He hopes both parties could have a further partnership in vocational education.
Mr. Ryan revealed that next year will be the 5th anniversary of the program “Picture Yourself in Perth”. Perth will hold a series of celebrations with Chengdu’s relevant departments and schools.
Far-reaching Mutual Cooperation in Business, Trade
“After our company’s 51% equity was acquired by the Sichuan Tianqi Lithium Industries Inc., we have made remarkable technological progress,” said CEO of Perth-headquartered Talison Lithium Ltd., one of the world’s leading lithium producers. He shared successful experience of the mutual cooperation with the reporters.
The official with the Talison Lithium Ltd. said that he had already been to Chengdu for 5 times in recent years, and always was amazed by the city’s dramatic change and development.
Eddie Kwah, vice president of the Western Australian Chinese Chamber of Commerce Inc. said that he had witnessed the rapid growth of Chengdu in various fields when he attended the 12th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention last year. “I often traveled to Chengdu. But I hope it could further promote its abundant tourist resources and fine food in Australia,” he added.
Perth-Chengdu Direct Flight to Open
On December 12, the reporters visited Perth’s Shenton College and Murdoch University, and interviewed Perth’s mayor Ms. Lisa Scaffidi. The mayor said to the reporters that since Chengdu and Perth established a friendly tie, both cities have made fruitful achievements in various areas such as the “Picture Yourself in Perth Champion”, a typical cooperative program involving education between the two parties.
“Becoming more international and modern, Chengdu is attracting increasing attention of the outside world. Perth hopes to expand and promote the mutual win-win cooperation in the near future. In addition, Perth-Chengdu nonstop flight will be open in right time,” Ms.Scaffidi said.
