Recently, the State Council and the CPC Central Military Commission approved the construction of a new airport in Chengdu, according to the Chengdu Municipal Development and Reform Commission on January 14.
Sichuan Province will conduct a feasibility study on the construction and submit a relevant report to the National Development and Reform Commission. Upon approval of the report, the project is expected to start within the year.
The new airport is located in Lujia Township of Jianyang City, about 51 kilometers away from downtown Chengdu. Currently, an expressway leading to the airport and an intercity high-speed rail linking the city center and the airport are in construction.
The area of the new airport’s terminal is nearly 1.8 times as big as the Shuangliu International Airport’s. To handle 320,000 takeoffs and landings every year, the airport will have an annual passenger traffic of 40 million and a yearly cargo throughput of 700,000 tons by 2050.
The airport is approved to have an investment totaling RMB69.26billion (approx. US$11.17billion). After completion, Chengdu will be China's third city with two airports following Beijing and Shanghai.
