Chengdu-Addis Ababa Direct Air Link Launched

Authors: Go Chengdu

A direct air service between Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, and Addis Ababa, capital of northeast Africa’s Ethiopia, was launched by Ethiopian Airlines (ET) on May 22. The one-way journey takes just 9.5 hours.
By far, Chengdu has already opened 282 air routes including 100 international (regional) ones. It's believed that the just-launched non-stop service between the city and Addis Ababa will give fresh momentum to the business and cultural exchange between China and Africa, and further upgrade the city's international (regional) air network.
ET operates the service using Boeing 787-800 aircraft. The outbound flights numbered ET637 leave Chengdu at 01:50 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and arrive in Addis Ababa at 06:20 (local time). The inbound ones numbered ET636 leave Addis Ababa at 00:10 (local time) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and arrive in Chengdu at 14:40.
ET signed an agreement with the Chengdu city government and Sichuan Airlines Group Co., Ltd. on the cooperation in international air service, at the World Routes 2016 convened last September.
"We operate the routes between China and Africa using the most advanced airplanes, in an great effort to offer better user experience to our passengers," said Yared Berta, the chief representative of ET to China at the inaugural ceremony. According to him, as an Africa-based aviation company, ET is committed to connecting Africa and major financial, industrial and business centers across the world together, and China is one of such centers. With the Sino-African business and trade relations furthering constantly, Ethiopia, one of the engines fueling east Africa's economic growth, is attracting more and more Chinese enterprises involved in the Belt and Road (B & R) development to invest in Africa. This route over the B & R, will enhance the tourism and cultural exchange and increase the trade cooperation between China and Africa.
The Chengdu-Addis Ababa route is the second nonstop regular service between Chengdu and Africa, following the Chengdu-Mauritius link. Besides, the city has opened two direct charter flights for tourists to Aswan and Cairo.
